What to expect

Embarking on the journey of psychotherapy is kind of like taking a car service--you tell the driver (i.e., your therapist) where you want to go (i.e., your treatment goals) and he or she uses their experience and knowledge to help get you there in the safest and most expedient way (i.e., treatment interventions and modalities) possible. In the beginning of treatment, your therapist will provide a non-judgmental environment that helps you feel supported and understood. After sharing some background information about yourself and the presenting problem, you and your therapist will work together on treatment objectives that will lead to reaching your goals. Mental health counseling is not limited to the alleviation of anxiety, addiction, depression, or some other mental illness; it can also facilitate self-awareness, insights, and holistic health. Operating from a bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework, Abbott Mental Health counselors facilitate traditional talk therapy (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) along with more experiential modalities (e.g., EMDR, DBT, MBCT and AEDP) to provide you with both information and transformation.
